Understanding Mean, Median, Mode
Mean, median, and mode are ways to summarize a set of numbers, like test scores in a class.
Mean is the average, found by adding all numbers and dividing by how many there are.
Median is the middle number when numbers are arranged in order.
Mode is the number that appears most often.
These help us understand data, like finding out how students typically score on a test!
Average: 30
Middle: 30
Most Frequent: 20
What is Mean and How to Calculate
The mean is the average of a set of numbers. It tells you what the typical value is.
How to Calculate:
- Add all the numbers together to get the total.
- Count how many numbers there are.
- Divide the total by the count.
Example: Scores: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50
Total = 150
Count = 5
Mean = 150 รท 5 = 30
What is Median and How to Calculate
The median is the middle number in a sorted list of numbers.
How to Calculate:
- Arrange the numbers in order from smallest to largest.
- Find the middle number. If there's an even number of values, average the two middle numbers.
Odd Number Example: Scores: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50
Sorted: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50
Median = 30
Even Number Example: Scores: 10, 20, 30, 40
Sorted: 10, 20, 30, 40
Median = (20 + 30) รท 2 = 25
What is Mode and How to Calculate
The mode is the number that appears most often in a set of numbers.
How to Calculate:
- Look at all the numbers.
- Find which number appears the most times.
- If no number repeats, there is no mode. If multiple numbers repeat the same amount, there can be more than one mode.
Example with Mode: Scores: 10, 20, 20, 30, 40
Mode = 20 (appears twice)
Example with No Mode: Scores: 10, 20, 30, 40
No mode (no number repeats)
Mean, Median, Mode Challenge
๐ Congratulations! ๐
You've completed all challenges!
How to Play the Game
- For Mean: Click "ADD ALL OBJECTS" to sum them, then "TOTAL NUMBER OF OBJECTS" to divide and get the average.
- For Median: Drag objects to sort them in order, then if odd number of objects, select the middle one; if even, average the two middle ones by clicking the button.
- For Mode: Click on the numbers that appear most often, then check your answer.
