Understanding Equivalent Fractions
Equivalent fractions are fractions that represent the same value, even though they look different. For example, 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 are all equivalent.
Think of a pizza: half a pizza (1/2) is the same as 2 quarters (2/4) or 4 eighths (4/8). The amount of pizza stays the same!
To create equivalent fractions, multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator by the same number.
Concept of Multiplier (Scaling)
A multiplier is a number that scales both parts of a fraction or ratio equally. When you multiply both numbers by the same multiplier, the relationship stays the same.
Think of a recipe: if you double everything (multiply by 2), the taste stays the same. If you only double one ingredient, it won't taste right!
Example: 3/5 ร 2 = 6/10. We multiplied both 3 and 5 by 2, so the fractions are equivalent.
Visual Example of Scaling
Both the numerator (3โ6) and denominator (5โ10) were multiplied by 2
How to Play
- Explore: Click on any pie segment to adjust the fraction. Watch how the portion changes!
- Target: Look at the target fraction and its pie chart shown at the top.
- Find Matches: Select pie charts that share an equal portion to the target fraction.
- Check: Click "Check My Answer" to see if you found all equivalent fractions.
- Learn: The game will highlight correct matches in green and show you which ones you missed.
- Progress: Earn points for each correct answer!
Remember: Equivalent fractions look different but represent the same amount. For example, 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6!
How to Play
- Split Circles: Press the + button to split the unsplit circles into segments.
- Hide Splits: Press the - button to hide the most recent split.
- Color Segments: Click on individual pie segments to color or uncolor them.
- Watch Calculation: The right panel shows you step-by-step how to convert the improper fraction.
- Understand Division: See how dividing the numerator by the denominator gives you whole numbers and remainder.
- Check: Click "Check Answer" when your colored pieces match the numerator.
- Example: For 14/6: 14 รท 6 = 2 (quotient) with 2 remaining. So 14/6 = 2 2/6
Tip: Keep splitting circles and coloring segments until your total colored pieces equals the numerator!
